Chevrolet may be preparing a number of changes to the flagship Camaro ZL1 for the 2023 model year. According to MotorTrend's sources, Chevy is planning on releasing a new Camaro model that will have the 6.2-liter supercharged V-8 seen in the Cadillac CT5-V Blackwing.
As you already know, GM is on a roll, releasing a slew of new EVs. The corporation is committed to going all-electric by 2035 and become carbon-neutral by 2040. The Chevy Camaro is a true American muscle car icon and could be one of the victims of that zero-emissions push.
Coming back to the Camaro, a prototype of the 2023 Camaro ZL1 was reportedly spotted on the back of a trailer, and photographs have circulated on social media.
This comes as a surprise because it seemed unlikely that Chevy will not go all-in to modernize a Camaro that is soon set to be phased out. Although, according to Motor Trend's sources, Chevy is planning on releasing a new Camaro model that will have the 6.2-liter supercharged V-8 seen in the Cadillac CT5-V Blackwing.
The CT5-V Blackwing debuted with a 668 horsepower version of GM's supercharged 6.2-liter LT4 V-8 engine.
This version of the LT4 V-8 has a minor power advantage over the Camaro ZL1's 650 horsepower. The engine produces 659 pound-feet of torque in the Cadillac and can be tweaked to produce even more torque for the Camaro.
Other likely additions could include the newest generation of MagneRide suspension tech and optional carbon-ceramic Brembo brake rotors. Chevy might also preserve the manual transmission option, as it does on the present CT5-V Blackwing and Camaro ZL1.
So when can we get our hands on this hardcore version of the Camaro? Well, MotorTrend predicts that it should be available for the 2023 model year and will be available until the end of the sixth-generation Camaro's life cycle in 2024.
Do keep in mind that this redesigned Camaro ZL1 won't be the track-focused, Corvette Z06-powered Z/28 resurrection that some may have hoped for. However, it would be a fitting send-off for the sixth-generation Camaro. Even though the prospect of an all-new ultra-hardcore Camaro Z/28 still piques our interest, we can only speculate on what a Blackwing-spec Camaro ZL1 can do.
In terms of what happens post-2024, there are suggestions that Chevy will replace the Camaro with an electric performance sedan. Don't dismiss this concept. Dodge, for instance, has so far committed to an electric muscle car for 2024, while Ford already sells an electric Mustang although in crossover guise.
